toothing – not a hoax in the middle east

Toothing might have been exposed as a hoax, but don’t tell that to young singles in UAE. Like in many predominately Muslim countries, it’s considered rude for men to speak with women unless they’re married or related to them. According to BBC News Online, this is where toothing comes in handy.

Any bluetooth enable device, such as a mobile phone, PDA or laptop can search for other devices within a 10 m range. Once a device has been found, users can exchange messages, photos, or other data. In UAE, this helps singles meet and flirt:

"In our country it’s very rude to go up and talk to them," he says. "I sent some notes, they liked them – they took my number and they called me. I say nice things – I’m into poems."
