Jeff Jarvis kicked off the Networked Journalism Summit by walking us through the hectic schedule of the day. The event should be well covered as there is free wifi and the Times Center Auditorium is a sea of bloggers feverishly typing away at their macs.
Jeff asked us to tag our posts, photos and other content with netj to make it easier to find.
The people from groundreport.tv are also broadcasting live video and Blog Talk Radio will be doing interviews with some of the delegates, including myself, throughout the day.
In the first session of the day, John Wilpers of BostonNow made the point that when they quote a blogger in the newspaper, it can "bring them into the fold", and hooking them in as a reader of the paper. Wilpers says that many of the bloggers they quote end up emailing to ask not for a link to the online version of the story or a pdf of the page, but for an original copy of the print edition.
The second session is about revenue which should be interesting but I'm going to give my hands a rest for now because I'm on stage at 10.15 as part of the "international" panel which will include:
- Martin Huber of MyHeimat, a German site that encourages it's audience to submit their own stories which are then repackaged, printed, and distributed as hyper local freesheets.
- Adrian Monck of City University of London which is working on a citizen news project with SkyNews
- Paul Sullivan from Orato, a Vancouver based site which recently received much attention for hiring two former sex industry workers to cover the court case of a suspected serial murder, whose victims were prostitutes
- The panel will be moderated by The Guardian's Neil McIntosh.
