Speaking at Blog Evento, Seville (2010)

During nearly 20 years of professional experience, I’ve had the pleasure of devising, implementing and managing digital and social media propositions for some of the World’s most important organisations and brands.

My approach combines techniques from academia, management consultancy and user experience design. Through this approach, I’m able to help clients focus on activities that bring stakeholders – both internal and external – closer to business critical processes, driving measurable progress towards meeting strategic objectives.

I presently split my time between freelance work and a part-time role as Digital and Content Director at London based Impact Marketing agency, T/F/D.

I’ve had a variety of roles previously, most recently as Director of Social Business and EMEA Digital Network Lead at FleishmanHillard, a leading integrated PR and Marketing Agency with a global footprint.

I was appointed General Manager and Principal Consultant at Dachis Group, London in May 2013. We’re the World’s leading social business consultancy. It’s my second turn at the Dachis Group as I was Social Media practice lead at Headshift, which was acquired by the Group, for two years between 2008 and 2010.

Between July 2010 and May 20013 I was Director of Digital at Edelman, the World’s largest Communications agency. I worked across a variety of sectors and for clients ranging from small technology start-ups to multi-nationals in the FTSE 100 and Fortune 500. I also worked for both National and International Governmental bodies.

Between about 2002-2008, I held a variety of roles at the BBC where my last role was as the Corporation’s first Head of Blogging (Acting Editor). During my BBC career, I played a pivotal role in the roll out of every social media proposition of the Corporation – message boards, comments on articles, chat, blogs and third party social media – as well as the underlying processes and training that supported them.

I also spent a few years at Granada Media (ITV) and a mobile start-up, TalkCast.

I hold a BA in Education, MA with Distinction in Sociology, MPhil in Communication Studies and a PgDip in Law.

I’m also Visiting Fellow in the Department of Journalism at City University and was previously a Non-Residential Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Internet and Society.

I’ve also contributed articles to a number of edited scholarly collections on the social scientific study of life online. These include:

  • Online Communities: Commerce, Community Action and the Virtual University (on Amazon)
  • Virtuelle Gruppen: Charakteristika und Problemdimensionen (on Amazon)
  • Social Research Methods: A Reader (on Amazon)
  • Online Matchmaking (on Amazon)
  • Community Informatics: Enabling Communities with Information and Communications Technologies (on Amazon)

I hold both American and European Union (British) citizenship.
